Biography
Jaegone Kim is a composer whose work spans composition, visual art, and installation, drawing on auditory and visual experiences as well as imagination. Having been deeply interested in science from a young age, he naturally integrates astrophysical and chemical imagery with personal emotions in his music. His compositions unfold with flexible control over timbral contrasts and sonic density within concise structures, marked by the use of repetition, silence, and resonance. These elements allow his music to move beyond a traditional melody-centered approach, enabling deeper musical exploration and expressive sensitivity.
Kim views sound not merely as an auditory phenomenon but as something intimately connected to human experience. He believes that sound is deeply intertwined with emotions, memories, and personal encounters, and he seeks to express these connections through music and space. His works do not treat sound as a standalone element but rather emphasize the emotional and psychological responses it elicits. This perspective informs his creative approach, shaping how he captures and integrates the thoughts and emotions that sound evokes into both music and space. In 2024, he presented Water, Mark, an interactive sound installation that explored the relationship between sound, physical space, and audience engagement. Designed to encourage active participation, the exhibition provided an opportunity to deepen the exploration of the connections between music, space, and people.
Born in Daejeon in 1999, Kim earned his bachelor’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, studying under Marjorie Merryman, where he graduated early. He then completed his master’s degree at the New England Conservatory under John Mallia. While his musical journey began with a traditional education, it gradually expanded to embrace experimental methodologies and diverse musical approaches. He now collaborates with performers and artists worldwide, continuing to explore the evolving possibilities of sound.

청각적 요소를 넘어서 그 소리가 만들어내는 감정적, 심리적 반응을 중심으로 한
음악적 흐름을 찾을 수 있다. 이런 관점은 그의 창작 전반을 관통하며 소리가
불러일으키는 감정과 생각을 음악과 공간 속에 담아내는 원동력이 된다. 2024년에는관객 참여형 설치 음악 전시 <Water, Mark>를 선보였다. 이 전시는 소리와 물리적
공간을 매개로 관객과의 상호작용을 강조하며, 관객이 직접 참여할 수 있도록
설계되어 음악과 공간, 그리고 사람의 관계를 더욱 깊이 탐구하는 기회를 제공했다.
김재곤은 1999년 대전에서 태어난 그는 맨해튼 음악원에서 Marjorie Merryman 교수의 지도로 조기 졸업하고 학사 학위를 받았으며 이후 뉴잉글랜드 음악원에서 John Mallia 교수와 함께 공부하며 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 그의 음악적 여정은 전통적인 음악 교육을 바탕으로 시작되었으나 점차 실험적인 방법론과 다양한 음악적 접근
방식을 시도하는 방향으로 발전했다. 현재는 세계 각지의 연주자 및 예술가들과
협업하며 다채로운 음향적 변화를 탐구하는 작업을 이어가고 있다.
