Biography
Jaegone Kim is a composer and interdisciplinary artist working in music, visual art, and installation. Early fascinations with chemistry—how a material’s properties come from its structure and from conditions such as temperature and pressure—shape his musical imagination. He listens like a chemist, tracing how production methods shape timbre and texture. Composing through this lens, he weaves sonic textures that shift in timbre, resonance, and density, so listening feels tactile, almost visual.
The same inquiry carries into his visual and installation work, where placement and presentation change what objects do and how they’re understood. Together with his concern for tactile listening, this led to Water, Mark (2024), a viewer-participatory installation that repurposed sounding objects and musical scores; each piece established relations among viewers, space, and the work. He treats creative work as a practice for rethinking how we sense and how institutions work, pursuing paths that could open new communal possibilities.
Born in Daejeon, South Korea in 1999, Kim studied with Marjorie Merryman at the Manhattan School of Music (B.M.) and with John Mallia at the New England Conservatory (M.M.).

그는 화학자처럼 듣는다—소리를 만드는 방식이 음색과 질감을 어떻게 바꾸는지 추적한다. 그의 음악은 음색, 공명의 대비를 통해 긴장과 이완을 구성하고, 반복과
미세한 변형을 통해 섬세한 질감을 직조한다. 고정된 형식이나 화성 중심의 서사에서 벗어나 유동성과 미세한 흔들림에 주목하며, 듣기를 촉각적이고몰입적인 경험으로
전환하고자 한다.
이러한 접근은 자연스럽게 회화, 오브제, 영상 등의 시각 작업으로 확장되었다. 그는 물질의 물리적·상징적 변화에 집중해왔고, 이후에는 데이터의 가단성, 기록의
방식과 조건에 대한 질문으로 이어졌다. 2024년 개인전 <물, 음표>에서는 관객의
능동적 참여를 통해 소리가 공간, 신체, 사회적 맥락 사이의 관계를 어떻게 형성하고
변화시키는 지를 실험하였다. 그는 창작을 단순한 표현의 수단이 아니라, 감각과
제도의 구조를 다시 사유하고 재구성하는 실천의 장으로 바라보며, 새로운 공동체적 가능성을 열 수 있는 방식으로 탐구하고 있다.
